Class of 2026: Freshman Orientation

A Student's Guide to the Secrets of Strixhaven Prerelease

Welcome to the Biblioplex! Whether you’re a returning alumni or a first-year initiate, the Secrets of Strixhaven (SOS) Prerelease is your chance to showcase your magical aptitude. This set is built around high-impact spells and creature protection—let’s dive into your study guide.

1. The Paradigm Engine (Average Cost: 6 MV)

The Paradigm mechanic is the heart of the SOS "win condition." These are Sorcery - Lessons that exile themselves and recast a free copy at the start of every turn you take for the rest of the game.

Building for the Paradigm

The average Mana Value (MV) for a Paradigm spell is 6. This means your deck building needs to focus on survival and mana-fixing.
Strategy: You cannot afford to skip land drops. Because these spells give you "infinite" value once cast, your goal is to build a "Bridge Deck"—a deck designed to survive turns 1 through 5 until your Paradigm spell takes over the game.

2. Prepare / Prepared (The Subset Spells)

Creatures with Prepare are your early-to-mid game utility. When they become Prepared, they "generate" a specific spell in exile.
Strategy: Your opponent will try to remove these creatures to shut down your access to the exiled spell. Draft Ward creatures or "protection" spells to keep your spell-casting engine alive on the battlefield.

🏛️ The Mystical Archive (SOA) Selection

Each pack contains a legendary reprint. Use these to choose your path or strengthen your colors:

College-Affiliated (Multi-Color)

Card Name College Impact
Adrix and Nev Quandrix (G/U) Double your tokens—perfect for Fractal strategies.
Ral Zarek Prismari (U/R) The ultimate "turn-control" engine for Opus triggers.
Ink-Shield Silverquill (W/B) A massive combat swing that protects your life total.

Color-Specialists (Mono-Color)

Card Name Color Why it's Essential
Sylvan Library Green Fixes your draws to find your Paradigm spells faster.
Force of Will Blue Protects your "Prepared" creatures for 0 mana.
Demonic Tutor Black The best way to find your 1-of "Bomb" Paradigm spell.
Chaos Warp Red The "Catch-All" removal for problematic permanents.

Major-Specific Deck Building

  • Silverquill (W/B): Draft low-cost spells that target your creatures. You want to win before the opponent can reach their 6-mana Paradigm spells.
  • Prismari (U/R): Use Treasure tokens to cast your Paradigm and Opus spells 1-2 turns earlier than usual.
  • Witherbloom (B/G): Focus on life-gain triggers (Infusion). This buys you the time needed to cast your late-game finishers.
  • Lorehold (R/W): High synergy with the graveyard. Excellent at "recycling" removal spells to keep the board clear.
  • Quandrix (G/U): Ramp is your primary goal. Reach 6-8 mana as fast as possible to overwhelm the board with Fractals.
